Scissor Jacks

November 8th, 2009

Scissor jack lift is a type of automotive lifting device which comprises of two arms (connected by a pivot) and a carrying platform. It is mainly used for leveling or positioning the weight of heavy equipments (i.e. car, trucks, and machineries). Additionally, scissor jacks can also be used for supporting structures. They make use of screws or cylinder actuators which are powered by hydraulic, electric or mechanical methods. Aside from that, they also utilize linked folding support members that are drawn together.

Today, an automotive scissor lift jack is sold in a variety of configurations, lift capacity, styles, and features. When buying one, you should take note of some important buying considerations. First off, you need to consider the type of vehicle that you will be lifting. Each type of scissor jack is designed for a particular type of automotive vehicle. You also need to check the tool’s lift capacity, lift stroke, minimum and maximum height.

Technically, lift capacity is defined as the maximum lift force while the lift stroke is the difference between the fully-retracted and fully-extended positions of the jack. Minimum height can be acquired by measuring the distance from the jack’s base up to the lifting equipment in a fully-retracted position. The maximum height, on the other hand, is the distance from the jack’s base up to the lifting equipment during a fully-extended position.

Whether you are using a hydraulic scissor jack or electric scissor jack, it is critical that you strictly adhere with the safety guidelines when using one. Remember that safety must always be your number one concern especially when working with powerful automotive lifting tools.

Before you start operating the scissor lift jack, make sure that your vehicle is leveled on the surface. It is more ideal to place your car on a solid pavement or concrete. Once the vehicle has been leveled, use a scissor lifting jack that is capable of accommodating the weight of the vehicle you will be lifting. Never ever use the jack for other applications aside from its intended purpose.

After properly placing the lifting jacks, you may now start to slowly raise the vehicle on the desirable height. Make sure to shut off the car’s engine first before beginning the lift. Raise one side at a time and then continue lifting until the entire vehicle has reached the desired height. Ascertain that the lifting jacks has been locked and secured to ensure that the lifted vehicle will not fall down.  Lift your car with ease with the aid of efficient and functional scissor lifting jacks!
