Smart Shopping Tips For Used Ford Mustangs

[ 0 ] September 29, 2010 |

The Ford Mustang has enjoyed over 45 years as the ultimate status car, considered the ideal car by young and older drivers equally. Unfortunately, many people can not afford a brand new Mustang and the fact that any new car is devalued by 30% the moment it leaves the showroom makes looking for one of the many great used Ford Mustangs available even more enjoyable. However, it is wise to be armed with a few basic facts before initiating the shopping experience. Most shoppers already have a certain model or vintage they consider “the Mustang”, whether the early muscle car of the 1960’s, a more powerful newer model, or any of the sharp models in between. For these buyers, the search can be narrowed considerably, but just viewing all the models available may change any preconceived idea of what constitutes the perfect Mustang.

Whether the desired model will be used for daily driving, a show car that is garaged and displayed only at car shows, or the ultimate project car that will be restored over time, one of the first considerations will be the mechanical condition of the car under consideration. If possible, have a mechanic check it out, or if the car is being purchased online, only consider one that is near enough to permit personal inspection, as no vehicle should be purchased without the actual laying on of hands. If you have mechanical skills, even choosing a non-running Mustang may be a great buy, because often the present owner will price them cheaply. Another factor to consider is the condition of the body. Body repairs are not a problem if they are well executed, but obtaining a history by a service such as CarFax is always a wise protection. It is also important to determine how much of the Mustang’s equipment is original, as the use of after market parts reduces the value, therefore the price you should pay. Lastly, always check the title and VIN number to be certain the person selling it actually owns it and that the VIN number of the car considered for purchase matches the VIN on the title.

It is not a bad idea to bring a friend along when you go to look at the car, as this will help keep you focused on facts and not just the love of the car. Be suspicious of any seller that tries to rush a purchase, without allowing time to inspect and think about it before handing over hard-earned money. With these few tips, the search and ultimate possession of a used Mustang will be a fun and rewarding endeavor.
