Go Stylish: Wear a Vintage Motorcycle Helmet

[ 0 ] October 14, 2010 |

The use of a motorcycle helmet is mandatory if you value your health and well-being while out riding around town. However, it is not necessary to wear an ugly, plain old helmet which crimps your style. If you want to turn heads while out, a vintage motorcycle helm will add a chic look as you cruise about town. Vintage motorcycle helmets can be found fairly easily on the internet. The prevalent style is of the rounded, soldier-like dome top with chin strap. These helms lack the protective wind shield that is found in a full face helmet, and as such will require the addition of sunglasses or, if you want to complete the retro look, goggles can be worn as well.

While being fashionable is of course a necessity, do make certain you select a vintage helmet that is not vintage with regards to safety standards. Keeping your cranium safe is the first and foremost important feature of a helmet and one that should not be sacrificed for the sake of looking good. Ensure that the helmet is certified by the Department of Transportation; any helmet that has passed the rigorous testing of the association will have a sticker or tag on it announcing such.

Further, be sure to choose a helmet that fits. Put the vintage helmet on before you buy it. The key word here is snug: it should fit comfortably without being too tight and certainly not too large. A helm that is too big for your head can fly off in the event of an accident, thus leaving your skull unprotected from the impending impact. Keep trying on helmets for as long as is necessary to find the proper fit. Once the perfect one is found, gear up, strap on your goggles and head out onto the open road with a blue sky above you.
